Hello from Puerto Princesa

I woke up very early today to catch the 8 o'clock plane to Palawan. It is my first time to see this place. Good that it is Sunday today, which means that the flow of traffic is supposed to be very light in every sense of the word. And it is good, too, that it is not raining in Metro Manila the time.

On the way to the airport, it suddenly struck me that I was, for a moment, been taken back to Colombo, Sri Lanka. There was security check on the way there. I was told by the taxi driver that patrolmen do not allow cabs to enter close to the airport if they have no passengers. I was dumbfounded to hear this. And why would they do that? He told me that it was implemented so that the yellow cabs of the airport would have less competition with the others. Am I smelling something nasty here? Somebody is getting rich by unfair competition.

The trip from Manila to Palawan took a bit more than an hour. Uneventful. I am in the company of friends from Sapporo who are spending a few weeks here. It is Golden Week in Japan, by the way. So, they decided to spend the holidays in a beautiful country called the Philippines. I am brushing up again whatever little Japanese language skills have left of me. Honto ni, sukoshi Nihongo hanashimasu.

Upon reaching Puerto Princesa, the capital city of the island of Palawan, we rode the van going to the hotel. The Japanese were looking for seatbelt. A freaking seatbelt! Shitoberuto ha? I told them: Fuiripin de ha shitoberuto ha irranai desu. In the Philippines, no need for seatbelts. lolzzzz

We enjoyed the Philippine cuisine for lunch: sinigang na isda, pancit canton, fried chicken, etc. They seem to have enjoyed SMB and the full-bodied and cholesterol-pounding food spread.

Will tour the city and update you later. Ja mata.
