valentine's text brigade

15 Feb 2004
Sapporo City

So…Valentine’s Day it was. You had a hard time thinking of who could possibly be your date on that special day. Or, for the loveless, like me, how to spend this Day of Hearts. Shall I be alone? Or with friends?

You had troubles on who to date with…is it your number 1? Number 2? Number 3? And so on…?

You had troubles where to go. Will it be a dinner date with candlelight? A concert? Movies? Or what?

And so, more problems to cope with. You have decided to enjoy the carnal pleasures. To share each other’s worldly desires. Traffic! Yes, more traffic in Pasig, Pasay, and Sta. Mesa.

Gigantic problems on St. Valentine’s Day! You really think so? I think not!

The focal concern of Valentine’s Day, especially among Pinoys should be this: NAKAPULA KA BA NGAYONG VALENTINE’S DAY?

And so, I thought of starting my text campaign on that special day among all Pinoys I know of the world over. I posted them that Q and I tried to prove via statistical analysis whether we still adapt to our old tradition. I tried to prove this using Chi-square test at the alpha 0.05.

There were around 100 text messages sent with a response rate of 85%. Good batting average, I think.

Let’s see if you can see yourself here.

Of these, only three (3). Yes, only three people were actually wearing RED on Valentine’s Day! Some respondents wore red, like their watch is red. Their wallets are red. Their bag is red.

Two respondents wore RED underwear. Ngek! I remember when I was in second grade when I wore RED briefs (parang nylon pa nga ata yun!). But it’s a no no now for me. Hahaha

One respondent didn’t have to wear RED because she had her monthly visit that time.

So, tuloy pa rin ang pag text ko…Sige lang. Hintay lang ako ng replies.

Some people said they wore Black (she’s in bad mood that day), White, Green (for money), Lavender, and Pink (blouse, pajamas, or anything).

Some respondents justified their not wearing RED because they thought that it’s corny or something. Somebody said “Di na uso yon!”

But most people who said they didn’t wear RED didn’t say what color they wore?

Shall I assume, beyond reasonable doubt, that these people didn’t wear anything at all on Valentine’s Day? Were they the same people included in the traffic congestion along Pasig, Pasay, and Sta Mesa?

So it came to pass. The Day of Hearts when everything looks RED except our piece of clothing.

Ikaw, nag-RED ka ba sa Valentine’s Day?
